It's that time of year when friends and families gather to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and many other joyous occasions. Gatherings can be such a fun event to look forward to. Since food is often the center of many gatherings, it can be stressful for those of us who are working on a healthy relationship with food.

If you're like many people, you may have spent many years feeling like you had to fill your plate at parties and eat what you took. Or maybe you've been the person who picks at the food, not really eating anything because you're afraid of eating too much.

Remember that you are there for the experience. Focus on having fun and enjoying the company of those you are with and put the food on hold until you are hungry.

And in case you do find yourself getting hungry, don't panic. Listen to your body, eat slowly and mindfully, enjoying each bite. You may even want to try putting a smaller plate next to the buffet so you can take smaller portions and still enjoy all the gathering has to offer. Another option is to wait 15 minutes before going back to the food to make sure this is what you’re really hungry for.

And last but not least, don't forget to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will help you feel more full and may even help prevent overeating.

So, go out and enjoy all the parties this season has to offer without stressing about the food.
