🛒 The 60-Second Grocery Hack (Plus a special gift inside!)
When we are walking down those grocery store aisles, it can feel like a minefield of marketing magic. You see bright colors and loud claims like "All Natural!" or "Heart Healthy!" and suddenly, your cart is full of things that promise the moon but deliver, well, not much.
As a Dietitian, I am going to let you in on the biggest secret of all: the front of that box is just a fancy advertisement. 😳
If you want to know if a food is actually going to love your body back, you have to flip the package over. It takes only 60 seconds to become a pro at reading labels. Ready to master your shopping trip? Let’s dive in.
The Ingredient Truth Zone
Before you look at a single number, look at the ingredients. They are listed by weight, and the first three account for the majority of what you are eating.
The Hack: Look for short lists with words you recognize. If you are picking up whole-grain bread, the first ingredient should be "Whole wheat" or "Whole grain," not "Enriched wheat flour".
The Trap: Watch out for sneaky sugars hiding under names like high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, or maltodextrin.
Respect the Serving Size
Every number on that nutrition label is tied to the serving size at the top.
The Hack: Always ask yourself, "Is this how much I am actually going to eat?"
The Trap: That small bottle of iced tea might look low in calories, but if it contains two servings and you drink the whole thing, you are getting double the sugar!
Seek the "Big Three" Benefits
Look for the nutrients that provide sustained energy and keep you feeling full:
Dietary Fiber: Your gut’s best friend. Look for 3 grams or more per serving to keep things moving and prevent energy crashes.
Protein: Essential for muscle repair and staying satisfied for hours.
Vitamins & Minerals: Scan the bottom of the label for the "good stuff" like Vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, and Potassium.
A Note on Summer Hydration
As we navigate the warmer months, watch these two numbers closely to keep your energy high:
Added Sugars: Keep this as close to 0 grams as possible. It is the quickest way to a blood sugar crash.
Sodium: Keep it under 140mg per serving. High sodium pulls water out of your cells, leaving you feeling sluggish and bloated.
My Cheat Sheet: The 5/20 Rule
When you are staring at that Daily Value (%DV) column, keep this simple rule in your pocket:
5% or less: The food is low in that nutrient. (Great for Sodium and Added Sugar!)
20% or more: The food is high in that nutrient. (Perfect for Fiber, Protein, and Vitamins!)

A Little Inspiration from Our Community
One of my wonderful clients, Grace, wrote this poem for my Summer Reset group. I love this and wanted to share it with you. Whenever the day feels tough, or the fridge starts calling, I want you to remember these words:
When times have been tough, Your day has been rough, You've been listening to people complain about stuff, Loads of things going round in your head, So you go to the kitchen and reach for the bread, Just remember what our girl Kim always says, "You've got this!"
When your day has been itty, annoying, or bitty, And you've had enough of all things shitty, No point in heading out to the kitchy, You've got this!
When you're down and want some swine and chips, Remember before they hit your lips and pass their time on your lovely hips, You've got this!
Whether you're hungry, or think that you're not, It won't be food that comforts your spot, Just count all your Blessings and all of your lot, You've got this!
When Life throws us mouldy and surprising curve balls, Don't let your fridge help build up new walls, Allow yourself to stand up Tall, You've got this!
The road can be hard, the way isn't straight, Love what you eat, don't eat what you hate, Don't stress about Crap, or stress about weight, You've got this!
You've been given a Gift of Life on this Earth, And it's a Blessing to share the Joy of your Worth, You deserve all good since the day of your Birth, You've got this!
You owe it to YOU, You Beautiful Soul, To enjoy your Life and enjoy it Whole, Don't be ruled by cake and breadrolls, You've got this!
All good wishes to Everyone, Let's get out there and have some Fun, Let's laugh and enjoy our walks in the Sun, And embrace each day in which we have Won, Be proud of yourself and all YOU HAVE DONE! Yes indeed, WE'VE GOT THIS!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
