The Cold, Hard Truth About Your "Easy Button" (And What You're Really Hungry For)

Can we talk about the biggest, shiniest, most dramatic story in nutrition right now. Everyone is whispering about the “magic shots.” Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro (call them what you will), they are absolute game-changers for the human body. They turn down the hunger hormone volume.
It’s an easy button, right? And after decades of diet-shame and feeling out of control around food, you deserve a break. I get it. The relief is palpable for some.
But here is the truth that the pharmaceutical commercials won’t tell you: These shots change your body’s signals, but they don’t change your brain’s programming.
The Core Problem: Your New Body, Your Old Brain
Think of your body as a sophisticated car (a Rivian or Tesla) and your emotional history with food as the GPS system.
The medications are like putting a governor of sorts on the engine; they regulate your speed (your hunger and metabolism). Fantastic. You’re no longer driving 100 mph toward the pantry at 9 PM. (So basically, your drive-bys stop!)
But the moment you take the governor off (stop the medication), the GPS hasn’t forgotten the original, bumpy, shame-filled route. It’s still programmed to lead you to the same old emotional stops:
Bored? Go to the freezer.
Stressed? Head for the happy hour.
Had a bad day? Treat yourself with a drive-thru or drive-by.
The medication fixes the what (less food consumption), but it doesn’t touch the WHY (your emotional relationship with food). The moment you stop, your brain says, “Okay, engine is back to normal! Let’s go back to the old routes!” This is the root of the dreaded rebound fear. I talk about this in Chapter 1 of my book, “Eat when you are hungry: your body’s talking. Obsessing Over Health Is Not Wellness
I’ve said it for almost 30 years: Food is fuel. It is not entertainment or the enemy.
The diet industry has convinced us that “wellness” is about obsession: obsession over macros, over fasting times, over ingredient labels. Now, the new noise is an obsession over your injection schedule and your prescription dosage.
But obsessing over health is not wellness. It’s just a different kind of food prison.
