How’s your Dry January going?

This is good practice for building sustainability.

I’m hearing from some clients that their Dry January is going strong and others that it’s too hard. NEVER SAY THAT AGAIN!!!! No negative self-talk here. With a little over 2 weeks to go, there's still plenty of time to reap the benefits!

Here's a snapshot of how things should be shaping up:

The Good:

  • You have Improved your sleep pattern: more than half of Dry January participants will report sleeping better, thanks to alcohol's disruptive effect on REM sleep.
  • Boosted energy: With no hangovers to hold you back, that makes you feel more energized, focused, and ready to tackle the day.
  • Weight loss: Surprise, maybe you see a reduction on the scale, as alcohol is calorie-dense and often leads to unhealthy late-night snacking.
  • Clearer skin: Alcohol dehydrates and contributes to inflammation, so how’s your reflection? Do you see improved skin tone and texture?
  • Financial savings: Saving money by ditching the booze, which can be used for other goals or enjoyed as a bonus.

The Challenges:

  • Social pressure: Some people face challenges navigating social situations without alcohol, but there are plenty of creative non-alcoholic/mocktail options and supportive communities to help.
  • Cravings: The first few days can be the toughest, with cravings for the familiar routine or the feeling of relaxation alcohol provides. However, mindfulness techniques and healthy substitutes can help overcome these hurdles.
  • FOMO/Missing out: Some worry about missing out on the fun or feeling awkward at social gatherings, but when you are focusing on the positive changes and finding alternative ways to enjoy yourselves it can ease these anxieties.

Overall, Dry January can be a truly transformative experience, even if you don't go completely alcohol-free for the entire month. Many people find it helps them develop a healthier relationship with alcohol, establish new habits, and feel more energized and in control. Not to mention you can use these new tools to help build a healthier relationship with food, too!

So, whether you're a Dry January veteran or just starting out, remember:

  • Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Every day alcohol-free is a victory!
  • Don't be afraid to ask for support. There are many online communities and resources available to help you stay motivated.
  • Focus on the positive changes you're experiencing mentally and physically. The benefits of Dry January go far beyond just avoiding hangovers.

Here is an inspiring quote to keep you going:

  • "Change your thoughts and you change your world." - Norman Vincent Peale

Remember, you've got this!

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about Dry January or your dietary health journey in general.
